The first half didn’t really spring into action until the final seconds when Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead, thanks to a blistering counterattack orchestrated by Gabriel Jesus.
Up to that point, not much had happened. Martinelli did have a good chance to put the Gunners ahead early on, and there were a few other “moments,” but it was a bit of a stuttering first half until the goal.
There was the customary David Raya blunder with the ball, but luckily enough, nothing came of it, and Sevilla offered almost nothing. If there was one team that was the better, it was certainly Arsenal.
The second half was a much better affair and a lot more cagey. Jesus put Arsenal two up with a brilliant solo effort, and it looked like the game was done at that point. However, Sevilla got themselves back into the game from a corner, and all of a sudden, the momentum shifted.
That said, Arsenal still looked fairly comfortable and never really looked like conceding a second. Well, not until Raya made another blunder late on. There was the odd counterattack from Arsenal but not much else.
Overall, it was a job well done. Arsenal came home with all three points, and at this stage of the Champions League, that’s all that matters.
Could Arsenal have made the game more comfortable for themselves? Probably, but a win is a win, and it’s back to the Emirates for Arsenal, one step closer to the knockout stages.
Great game. Tomi was great as was Jesus.
Happy for the win but unhappy with Raya’s performance and MA insisting on playing him.
Its time for ramsdale to be back betwern the sticks i am sick and tired of raya with his rubbish blunders there is’nt one game that goes by that this man does’nt scared us i swear he is going to be the death of us
Beautiful goals. Jesus was my MOTM for his creative turns and wonderful goal
Rice was excellent as our midfield general, but Odegaard lost too many duels
Joginho is loosing his DM instinct and lacking in strength. Good win in a difficult ground. Rice and Jesus gave their best.
Jorginho wasn’t as fast as Rice, but Sevilla allowed him to distribute the ball
Jorginho is not a DM and has never been one
👍
Partly injured again or some other issue? Does he want to leave so Artera not playing him ?
This midfield trio doesn’t work. Rice needs to be the 6. Odegaard needs to find form fast, LCM spot is still completely up for grabs. Honestly, this should’ve been sorted in the summer window but arteta made the poor decision to make havertz an 8, and predictably he’s having to give up on that. When’s he going to consider ESR or Trossard in midfield. The reality is we don’t have the player he wants in LCM and needs to find a solution fast.
RSH, Thomas Partey is the ignored, but essential piece of the Arsenal midfield puzzle.
Partey has been injured and fitness suspect.
Nice win with the Brazilians sharing the glory, why is the gaffer forcing Odegaard and we have Smith Rowe.
A win is win whether it plastered over the cracks that’s for a next discussion.
Tomi man of the match by a long shot and credit to the defence and Rice
Not really sure what the point of Jorginho is and forgot that Havertz even came on. Imagine being ESR and knowing you behind in the pecking order.
Raya with another shocker, Odecand Saka anonymous.
Hard fought victory. Raya almost made me faint. He tried to punch the ball but the ball almost went to his own goal post.
Rice is a very good buy. Love his work rate and drive. Shout out to Tomi, Jesus and Martinelli. Thought they were the stand out player.
What a relief! 3 points in the bag, top of our group! Everyone put in a decent shift with Jesus, Martinelli and Tomiyasu standing out. Too many shaky moments from Raya am afraid and I think it’s time Ramsdale is reinstated.
I’ll add Rice won everything! What a signing
Rice was MOM by a country mile.
Takehiro Tomiyasu Man Of The Match by a country mile. Mikel Arteta has gone through 6 GOALKEEPERS in 4 years. I think that says alot
Leno, Martinez, Ramsdale and Raya. Only 4.
Turner and Matt Ryan too
Runarsson still on loan I think but you he’s as good as gone so can still add that
@ Mike Ram. Leno, Martinez, Ramsdale, Turner, Matt Ryan and David Raya. 1,2,3,4,5,6 . That is 6. And Alex Runarsson will not be returning anytime too soon
A good all round performance by the team. But then kudos to Jesus for his creativity and decisiveness today.
And Tomiyasu? We’ve been missing out on a solid defensive display all this while, with him on the bench. That’s all I can say.
Again, Raya leaves so much to be desired with his performance. Doesn’t fill me with confidence when with the ball or when Sevilla put in a cross.
I think ESR would’ve been a better replace for Ordegaard to add more attacking bite towards the closing stages.
And for Nketia, he’s just not good enough to play for Arsenal.
Nketia and Kai substitutions did not impact the game at all. As for Raya, l have no idea what rose colored tinted glasses Arteta is wearing. He just looks so jittery and does not look convincing from incoming corners or crosses.
Such a shame for Jesus, as this was his best game since he came back from injury… I hope it’s not as bad as it looks.
It’s time to give Raya a rest, if only for his own self confidence and what better game to bring Ramsdale back than against one of his own clubs Sheffield United?!
MOTM for me was a four horse race – Jesus, Tomiyasu, Martinelli and Rice.
Biggest disappointment? Odegaard and Saka.
Great win, so sad for Partey once again… it makes the decision against chelsea a little clearer now.
Arteta does not wear glasses. The Raya criticism is over the top.
No it isn’t. It has a lot of justification.
In my view it is over the top and reflects the unnecessary knee-jerk reactions of you and a number of others.
Raya has made certain mistakes and I doubt anyone would argue about that. However, if one considers the overall impact of both Ramsay and Raya to the way we play there is little to choose between them.
If one considers last season Raya was better than Ramsay in most categories that are relevant to a modern goalkeeper. This season there is little to choose between them. Except of course the bias of certain Arsenal fans.
You are entitled to your opinion but people like you are in the minor and rose tinted glasses.
The Raya criticism is excessive. Granted that he is a downgrade from Ramsdale, but not by much. It’s certainly not as ridiculous as starting Havertz in midfield over Partey at the start of the season. That was miles apart and what I consider a travesty
TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE A RIGHT, is an apt and true saying.
You state yourself that RAYA is a downgrade on RAMSDALE.
So would you prefer RAMSDALE TO BE REINSTATED or do you prefer we continue with “his downgrade”(your own words and true ones too)?
The Cruyff turn and pass from Jesus to Martinelli was a thing of beauty and both goals were outstanding.
David Almunia
😂 😂
We are a much better team than Seville and we won, so job done. I thought, Rice, Tomi, Jesus,Martinelli, Saliba and Gabriel had stonkers. I thought Raya, White, Jorghino and Odergaard had stinkers. Good away win in the end, even if we lost control in the last 15 mins.
Odegard was so easily pushed aside Reggie. Far away from the odegard of last season and hopefully he comes off the bench in our next game, knowing Arteta it won’t happen, even Raya will still start
Raya, is looking an embarrassing situation at the moment and Arteta is staking every bit of luck he has on it. How Ramsdale got bombed out for him at the moment looks, silly. Ramsdale must think to himself, i must be Sh!+, with what he is seeing.
Reggie, good thing that Arsenal only has an option to buy.
Spurs and Postecoglou wouldn’t pay Brentford’s asking price and bought Vicario. How gòd does that decision/judgement call look now?
I would be interested in what pjennings has to say, given his goalkeeping expertise.
Ozzie, i actually think/thought Raya was a decent keeper before he joined us but the way Arteta has dumped Ramsdale and put Raya straight in, has done nobody and i mean nobody any favours and has created a monster.
Is it an option or an obligation to buy? Recalled reading somewhere that Brentford accepted the loan deal only because it included an obligation to buy. It’s a workaround we used to comply with FFP rules as signing Raya last summer would have breached our limit
Its an option.
Odegaard was very poor
Both him and Saka seem to have not recovered from last seasons efforts. But im sure they will come good.🤞
Game of 2 halves
The first was largely uninspiring until the wonder pass and wonder goal
Jesus scored a cracker and we just didn’t capitalise afterwards. No going for the jugular. Once Sevilla scored it looked a bit dicey but we didn’t buckle. EN isn’t the answer and unless Raya regains his composure, nor is he.
This was a good win against a tricky opponent. The Raya criticism is excessive. I do agree that Nketiah is not a top level striker.
It doesn’t help that many supporters are finding supporting Raya problematic but he is currently showing the signs of the jitters. Ramsdale appears to not be fazed by anything even though he wasn’t on his game at times last season
I don’t know the answer and possibly Arteta doesn’t yet and is jittery about reversing his decision or undermining Raya.
I’m a big fan of Arteta but even I’m bemused at how he didn’t see that two first team keepers on the payroll could upset the balance.
At the moment there is little to choose between them based on outright performance. Ramsdale has a likability factor (amongst Arsenal fans) and often gives off an air of confidence even when he makes mistakes.
Do you or dont you accept that what counts is NOT what RAYA once did at Brentford, OR that what DOES count is what he does in OUR team?
I know what I think and I SUGGEST most Gooners think as I DO!
Tomi didn’t put a foot wrong.
Fully agree.
What a player.
Yet Tomyasu is not Arteta’s first choice, but what do we know?
He become first choice after tonight ozziegunner
A good win, Jesus looked world-class today let’s hope he continues this form at the weekend. Raya was Raya but Arteta will make excuses for him.
At this point Arteta is really trolling 😁 or being stubborn when it comes to Raya.
At this point and for my own peace of mind, l better just accept it is what it is and move on until the scales from his eyes fall off 😭.
Why are we fans quick to judge Arteta, this is the same way we criticised Arteta for starting Havertz, now no ones saying anything since Havertz is starting from the bench,
I’m sure Arteta will relegate Raya,if he continues to give mistakes, but he needs to give Raya his chance,
IMO, same may happen to Odegaard if he continues to play in the shadows, so far Arteta hasn’t disappointed I wonder why fans complain so much.
A lot of fans are simply looking for things to complain about. Most of the criticism is as usual over the top and lacking in perspective.
I admit to being old school but the brilliant defensive perf of Tomi gladdened this old fans heart. Excellent play by Tomi, Rice, Jesus, Martinelli, and our two TRUE TOP CLASS CENTRE HALVES, neither of whom would have been anywhere near our club, IF the worst judge of CB s in God knows how long, Arsene Wenger, had been managing, instead of MA.
I have always loved PROPER TOP CLASS DEFENDERS and we now have a team full of them. We would have one more, if only MA would see sense and reinstate RAMSDALE, instead of jittery, error strewn, RAYA.
You had to find a way to berate Arsenal Wenger…that’s petty from you and I used to think all old people are wise people
Well Jon certainly shows you that wisdom doesn’t come with age in every case Terrah, especially after I had shown him the GA record of Arsene Wenger has not improved under Mikel Arteta.
If you thought that about ALLold people, then you were naive at best and foolish at worst!
BUT MANY older and vastly more experienced fans have more life wisdom in general.
THAT would be a generality, but more true than untrue , overall.
Stop this digs AT Wenger Jon…..AW had Kolo Touré and Sol Campbell in the Invincible Season a very good partenership Indeed which didn’t cost a penny almost….Koscielney and Mertesacker wasn’t Bad either……Even Van dijk was in his radars in 2015……
Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die
Mistaking truth for “anger” is also not wise! I feel litte but affection toards Wenger these days but to forget the many mistakes he made, predominantly with ourlong lasting lack of a top class defence and esp in not even seriously trying to replace Gilberto with ANOTHER top class CDM, is a miske that wise and mature fans do not forget.
LEARNING FROM MISTAKES IS WISDOM AND NOT ANGER, my friend!
The biggest problem at Arsenal is that Mikel Arteta is over complicating matters. The players don’t know if they are Arthur or Martha. Come November/December when matches come thick and fast, I guarantee you the wheels will well and truly fall off
lol, whatever makes you think so.
@Vamos. I just happen to know the game more than you will ever know. I didn’t just grab my Level 5 UEFA COACHING BADGE from out of a Kellogg Cornflakes packet
Alright, we’ll see how it goes when the time comes.
I disagree. Your “coaching badges” mean nothing. Simply demonstrates unnecessary arrogance. Have you managed any high level team?
lol mate, got to just give him due.
If I recall correctly Mr Jennings is/was involved with Japan national women team.
Three precious points in the bag, back on top of the group. Up next we host Sheffield utd.COYG!!!
I hope Tomiyasu gets a run in the premier league. Because, Zinchencko is a defensive liability, who gives away possession too frequently with his miss passes even when he’s not under pressure. Zinchencko (overrated) just cannot defend. He should be dropped and sold. Last season with injuries of Partey and Saliba and Tomiyasu, both Holding and Zinchencko poor defensive displays was part of the reasons Arsenal lost the title race. Arteta must also give ESR, Nelson, Vieira and Kiwior more opportunities. We’re already seeing a burnt out Odegaard and Saka. Must improve on players rotation to keep squad fresh and interested, while mitigating players injury and burn out. We need Ramsdale back in goal. Arsenal must sell and replace Jorginho in January transfer window too. Overall, great performances from Jesus, Martinelli, Tomiyasu, Rice, Saliba and Gabriel .
Well said
Why not play Zinchencko in the left side of our midfiled? Maybe Trossard or Vieira…
Odegaard was, again, very poor… I’m not a coach and I don’t know if it is better to drop/rest him and risk damaging his confidence or back him up even tough he is on a bad patch
Exactly. Play Zinchenko ahead and Tomiyasu behind him on the left hand side.
Always felt that Zinc should be tried in Xhaka’s role. He plays there for Ukraine anyway. MA has done more far fetched experiments than that.
Another experiment I would like MA to try is playing Jesus as LW and Martinelli as striker
Problem is we have too many top class defenders. Solid, reliable defense is crucial but you need to sacrifice one of Tomi or White to get the attack flowing. There will be games when we fall behind and these two are not going to kick start a struggling attack. I miss someone like Monreal at fullback. His attacking play and combinations with Ozil and Sanchez were a delight and those three were on a wavelength which unfortunately the likes of Xhaka, Ramsey and Giroud couldn’t maintain. And before someone says Monreal couldn’t defend, remember we stopped Chelsea from winning a double with a defence that also featured Bellerin, Holden and Mert. Our defense is much stronger now but our attacking options appear limited.
I would suggest that Bellerin, Holding, Mertesaker and Monreal actually stopped chelsea in their tracks that day – what a brilliant selection THAT turned out to be by AW.
It was an inspired performance Ken. However, Bellerin and Monreal also provided attacking options which are simply not in Tomi’s and White’s job description.
I have no idea where MA is going with some of these selections but it is starting to affect the team with injuries and loss of form.
Odegaard needs to either rest and regain his form or be replaced. We argued on this forum for years over Ozil not winning a tackle and fading out so where are we with Odegaard now?
Saka needs major rest. Martinelli needs rest.
Partey is injured but if he gets healthy he needs to get into midfield with Rice.
Without Declan this team is bang average right now. Tomiyasou offers a lot more than Zinchenko so maybe time to use Zinchenko in another role?
And finally if MA continues the Raya experiment soon we may be seen different results. The guy is all over the place. AR made errors too but not every game. the frequency of errant/idiotic passes are too many to ignore and MA may believe in his system but every system is only good as the execution.
Rest Odegaard and bring Trossard or Smith Rowe..
Strangely, Thomas Partey flew out with the team, but wasn’t included on the bench. He played in the Friendly Internationals for Ghana. 45 minutes in the first match, and 65 minutes in the 2nd match. And under the watchful eyes of Arsenal’s fitness trainer who is always present. Partey was unused in the Chelsea match, but has been training since returning from International Duties. Arteta was asked in the press conference on the fitness of Partey and Saka. The response was that they were both training. Then reports are that Partey has a muscular injury. Things don’t add up, as you will never get any common sense coming out of Arteta’s mouth. He only talks in riddles as it appears
Partey had a muscle injury and so had to be left out. Saka trained, was passed fit and played. How is that not common sense?
@Chapo said it all @David. That’s exactly what I was aiming at towards Thomas Partey, and to why it’s strange to why he would be injured and still allowed to travel with the squad. My 15 years as Head Goalkeeping Coach for the Japanese International Men’s and Women’s team, I’ve never known us to include players carrying injuries for a one off Qualification Match or even a Friendly International match. It’s not a financial thing, it’s more to do with bringing in other player into the squad. As for Thomas Partey, there are certain countries he may not be allowed to enter because of legal reasons. So @ David, I don’t know what you are going on about with your common sense nonsense. I also heard about the Thomas Partey legal reasons for why he may not have played against Seville. Maybe it’s not true,,, but it’s out there. And it’s common knowledge that any person on Bail Conditions can and cannot enter certain countries
Of course things don’t add up and it absolutely has nothing to do with injury. Heard it has to do with his legal issues in Spain that’s why he wasn’t included.
A win against Seville is something very few teams achieve in Europe, brilliant performance. Jesus was simply amazing and we are so lucky to have Rice. Tomiyasu also looks so great and confident. For the love of God, Arteta should bring back Ramsdale, far too many mistakes by Raya, Ramsdale must come back.
It’s time for Arteta to be true to his word. When he brought Raya to the club he said that no one was number one in any position. How can Rambo compete against Raya? Raya may be a decent keeper but he is not showing it and still he gets to be number one. I am behind Arteta for the most part, but this persistence with Raya is either stubbornness or stupidity, or both.
MA has never played the player on form when there are 2 or 3 options available. He plays the player he wants to prove he was right to sign (remember Willian)
We aren’t doing bad for a team, which apparently isn’t using the strongest formations.
What do you think made us compete for the PL title last season and possibly again this season and able to win at Seville, where mighty Real Madrid couldn’t a few says before?
We must really have a world class squad? Assembled by? Or maybe world class tactics to be able to get the results with such a bad selection?
JBG5, while wholeheartedly agreeing with you on the keeper debate, I have become accustomed and now expect less than straightforward answers from MA during press conferences and in statements made for effect.
He is adept at keeping hs TRUE cards close to his chest and perceptive fans have noted how he does this consistently.
So trying to second guess him is IMO a mugs game. We are not in the know and he prefers we are kept this way. JUST HOW IT IS, LIKE IT OR NOT!
I hear Chelsea are starting to hover around hoping to sign Ramsdale
To think this is the same Sevilla that gave Madrid a run for their money last weekend, kudos to Arsenal. Raya needs to sit on the bench.
I don’t get why everyone is picking on Odegaard. Most of our players are struggling because Arteta chose to start a new experiment instead of building on what we had last season. The base of our game (Partey and Xhaka) has been destroyed without adequate replacement, and as a result, we are playing too deep compared to last season. We shouldn’t be having this goalkeeper situation, and Arteta should have signed an actual CM instead of this Havertz experiment he was relying on.
Why is Arteta disturbing himself with selection hard aches when he has the answer within his squad. Play zinchenco in the zhaka role, period!
I shudder to think where we would be had we not signed the excellent Rice.Given Partey’s ongoing injury problems we badly need an athletic box to box midfielder to support Rice.We also need a top class Keeper as neither Raya nor Ramsdale fall into that category.Perhaps Tomi, who was terrific yesterday, can also play between the sticks? In any event, despite not playing particularly well we have dug out results against City, Chelsea and Seville so we are not entirely lacking. Finally, our centre back partnership is solidifying nicely and could develop into the best pairing we have had for some considerable time.
While I agree, we weren’t at our best against Chelsea, I do think, we performed extremely well against both City and Seville.
We can’t expect to dominate City, not even at home, nor can we expect to dominate Seville away.
We got the 2 wins with steely and well prepared performances.
Declan Rice is a rare gem that we signed. The way he conducts himself on and off the pitch is just admiral.
And to think, some on here thought he was nothing to shout about.
That “best pairing for some time” Grandad, with which I agree, includes GABRIEL, a CB til of late, constantly criticised by you, VERY WRONGLY TOO, IMO!
You have always underrated him and I AM SUPRISED, AT YOU, of all people!
Good game, shaky moments but good game non the less with very beautiful goals.
Motm Tomiyasu, the guy was everywhere.
I am thinking that Arteta wants David Raya to play the first 3 games of our ucl group stage then play ramsdale in the last 3 so as to give everyone some playing time and feel if the champions league ( I’m playing devils advocate here). It would be an unpleasant surprise to see Raya play when sevilla visits the Emirates.
Coyg.
Odegaard has been very poor over the last couple of games.
I’ve never undestood this Oodegard hype. I’ve never rated him and never will. Imagine we’ve bought Madisson as replacement…
what?
forget the pk goals, he was immense last season, barely had a night off
But this season he has been poor in the last couple of games…
Arsenal boys have been struggling since the first game of the season. They have been like they are tired. Not surprising considering that they had a gruelling pre-season training. The exposing cheekbones of Odegaard, Jesus and Saka are more noticeable than Trossard weight lost and Nketiah muscle gain. It’s effecting them now but they will slowly regain their full fitness and get better as the season progresses.
“The exposing cheekbones”? WHAT A STRANGE AND DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND PHRASE!
I suggest gaunt might be an appropriate term, Jon
If he honestly thinks any of those player he lists are “gaunt” then Sue, all I can say is he must be lacking something we all else have .
I would agree Havertz is gaunt, though he chooses not to mention him,as the only obviously “gaunt” and plain skinny player, but no other player in our club is.
