Confirmed Arsenal team to face Newcastle United -Jorginho captain

A huge game for Arsenal this evening when they take on Newcastle United and this is the team Mikel Arteta has selected to hopefully pick up all three points.

Newcastle are a very strong home side but they have lost at St James Park this season against Liverpool and are more than beatable. A lot has been made of the Newcastle fans and their stadium but Arsenal is no stranger to hostile environments and need not be cowered.

Arsenal did lose midweek but that was in no way close to the first team we see today and the same applies to Newcastle following their 3-0 win over Man Utd, their team today is also very different.

If Arsenal plays how we know they can, they will win today, hopefully, the manager gets the big calls and substitutions right.

Let us know in the comments below what you think about the team that Arteta has selected.

      1. Eddie my Lord rubbish he’ll score goals but championship level arteta sub kai quick you fool

    1. Announce himself to who 🙄?

Who doesn’t know Hervatz? He is average at best.

I believe Newcastle will see us as ten men

    2. I saw flashes of Xhaka in his crazy lunge at Longstaff that turned out to be his most impressive contribution so far by getting 3 other Newcastle players booked. Well done Havertz

  1. There will be 0 creativity through middle as no Zinchenko and Odegaard both are not in starting line up…
Hope Saka and Martinelli will have some best game

    1. Looking more like we will operate more through the wings than trying to be creative down the middle

    2. Have to admit on paper that was my concern, add in no Jesus through the middle of partey deep. Be interesting to see how it plays out. Zinchenko is available though so Tomoyasu is tactical and Zinchenko can come on.

  2. I think Zinchenko would be better at 8 than Kai, that would be better in this game as a 9 than Eddie. This midfield is not press-resistant and too slow, it will be a very difficult game.

    1. People say this about Zinchenko all the time yet neither Pep or Arteta has ever played him as an 8 probably a reason for that at this point.

  3. Is Odegaard unfit? We’ll start the game with six tall players, which should be enough to deal with Newcastle’s aerial prowess in set-pieces

    1. Creativity is my worry. Where will it come from in the absence of Odegard and Viera
Nketiah taken few chances that will come another concern.

My take is if we can’t win it try not to lose it. I remain optimistic.

      1. Havertz and Rice could tire Newcastle’s midfielders out in the first half, then Vieira could replace Havertz for the last twenty minutes if we need creativity

      2. it looks like Arteta is going for physicality over creativity today . Only way I can see this lineup working out. Hopefully we can be clinical on the chances we get when countering. I don’t expect a high possession game from us.

  4. So no Odergaard, ok, not a problem, ideal time to try Zinchenko in the Xhaka role but no, its Haverz. Rice is going to have to play like 3 players with that midfield. Arteta i think you have boobed and missed a trick. Haverz needs to repay your faith (maybe blind) in spades. I have no faith but lets hope. So the job of providing from midfield has been entrusted in a player, that has provided ziltch. 🤞

      1. its confusing because Arteta goes on and on about versatility amongst the players and he doesn’t use Trossard outside of a backup for Martinelli. He’s far too talented to just be relegated to playing that position. Especially when Havertz and Vieira have done nothing to warrant getting any minutes in our midfield.

        1. Would like trossard to play especially in the middle but he has had a bad or average game pretty much every time he starts. Plays much better when coming on vs tired legs

  5. Don’t know what’s up with Odegaard, he looked fit enough against West Ham, but he’s not even on the bench. It looks as though Havertz is the playmaker. Nah! That can’t be right.

    1. We’re going to be limited to just counterattacking today. Which was not how we won last season. Get ready for a long game.

    2. @Jax, your last sentence cracked me up “It looks as though Havertz is the playmaker. Nah! That can’t be right”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣,

I would have preferred Trossard as our No8 today, he’s the beat we have for that role.

  6. So people advocating for Smith Rowe to Start matches or be given more minutes should now see that they know nothing about coaching at all. I don’t know why a reasonable person will ever think he understand the players condition more than the people actually working with them every week.

        1. If they were English, they’d better get their coaching badges because EPL club coaches are generally paid better than doctors

  7. If this plan proves successful, Arteta will earn praise as a strategic genius. Nevertheless, should we face defeat, he might recognize that he has been overly reliant on underperforming players.

    1. Somehow, I get the feeling that this Newcastle match is the final chance for Havertz to prove himself.

  8. As always fans on this site seems to always write off the players on the team sheet before even the ball is kicked i thought the coaches choose players in the line up according to how they want their tactics to be in that game how many fans on this site are coaches anyway probably non or maybe one or two it’s always i want this i want that Raya that Ramsdale this Havertz this Jorginho that let arteta deside although we all love arsenal and we all want arsenal to win trophies it is the owner of the club that only reap rewards at the end of the day fans doesn’t get anything because i have never heard Real Madrid fans say we were all given money because we have won lots of Champions League stop this crying and let arteta manage the team although we don’t always agree on the line up if arsenal lose we will be sad but at the end arteta will be the only one responsible and face the sacking and not the fans.

    1. then don’t come on the internet if you don’t want to hear other peoples opinions? If you disagree then give a reason why instead of just trying to shut people down from speaking. Not all of us rate some of the players starting and disagree with the lineup. Obviously Arteta makes the final calls but why exactly aren’t we allowed to discuss his decision making? Who is stopping Mikel from managing the team, fan forum commenters? Tell us what we should all be commenting?

      1. Then go and get your coaching license so that we all see what you can do instead of mourning every week about the line ups

        1. You dont need to have a coaching licence to mourne and you probably dont to moan either. So stop moaning.

          1. I refuse to be blinded by you thoughts i support arsenal with the current reality that we have two of our best or better midfielders out Partey and Odegaard do expect FIFA to open the transfer window for arsenal only to buy players because they have injuries no you better change.

    2. Naftali, some of us are Arsenal fans, and not blind followers of Arteta. We support all coaches who do the best they can with the players they have at their disposal, to advance the interests of AFC. Arteta has shown he can be a great coach, but he’s not a messiah. He is a young coach, who’s already made a few mistakes, primarily because he is not infallible. He is young, inexperienced and evidently headstrong. Please don’t try and turn Arsenal fans into disciples of Arteta.

      1. I guess this site is for football only were did the disciples thing come from, what options do arteta have in the midfield anyway because both Partey and Ordegaard are out.

  9. A team with both Jorghino and Havertz is going to be hit hard and trampled on by Newcastle. Arteta, either doesn’t care about keeping pace with the leading pack, or he’s so delusional he thinks he’s king Midas, and whatever he wishes or touches turns into gold. I really hope he doesn’t put us through this, especially after seeing how porous this midfield was on Wednesday 🙆🏽‍♂️🙇🏽‍♂️

    1. Let me ask you,who would have rather played? I understand criticising Arteta but it’s not like he has options with all the injuries.

  10. Lets hope EN has his scoring boots on tonight. We do have injuries to some important players and one or two who have something to prove.

    1. His experience Reggie?
Let’s see how our injury ravaged team copes with the Newcastle ravaged team.
I don’t care how many sideways or backward passes we make, let’s just not get beaten.

      1. I think Newcastle is a tank Ken, not particularly creative but a battering ram of strength, the Geodie way. Howe has got them playing with belief and power. I hope little Jorgie boy doesnt get trampled on. Rice should be captain for me but who am i.

      2. Ken1945, Arsenal doesn’t need someone to wear the captain’s band tonight. We need a defensive midfielder. Jorghino is going to be falling all over the place.

        1. Let’s wait and see shakk we?
I’m actually hoping Jorginho has a great game, Mohlanka, it seems you want him to fail!!

  11. Let’s be optimistic and hope the players starting play for the shirts! We need passion, energy and determination to win this game and we will really see who is up for this season. After the loss at west ham we will be able to tell the character of our players.
    COYG!

    1. we have a shot today. it will come down to winning the physical battle in midfield. I’m not expecting silky, smooth Arsenal today. We have grinder out wins already this season and will need to do it again.

  12. We’re playing with 10 men again…why pick Havertz again??? I’d prefer Trossard, Reis nelson or even Zinchenko in his place. Havertz needs to earn his place in the starting 11 and so far he hasn’t even earned a seat on the bench!

    1. Who do we play then? Vieira and Elneny?
Trossard has not been tested there in a competitive game and would leave us with little to no impact player on the bench.

  13. Injuries to Timber, Partey, GJesus and now Odegaard is a very big concern for us. Because these are big Arsenal Arsenal players ego should be in thee team and regularly starting/playing. But despite their being absent for Arsenal away to Newcaste in the Efl today. The starting XI Gunners and those of them who Arsenal has picked for the match should be able to deliver a win in the match for Arsenal.
So therefore, let all of them turn up incredibly for the match leaving no stone upturned in the game to beat the Magipies. And turn all stones in the match to beat them as our reputation as the Arsenal is at stake.
therefore the 3 points at stake in the match MUST the Gunners collect on behalf of Arsenal FC today unfailingly.

  14. That midfield is gonna get slaughtered vs the powerhouse midfield of Newcastle unless they play a blinder. But its the best we can play with injuries. Odeggard, partey, ESR are out and playing both Vieira and havertz would have been tactical suicide.

    1. With a fit Partey and Timber we did, but not enough. With the injuries we have, we are worse than last season.

  15. Injuries to Timber, Partey, GJesus and now Odegaard is a very big concern for us. Because these are big Arsenal players which should be in the team and regularly starting/playing. But despite their being absent for Arsenal away to Newcaste in the Efl today. The starting XI Gunners and those of them who Arteta has picked for the match should be able to deliver a win in the match for Arsenal.

  16. This line up definitely not winning this game.

What happened to playing Zinchenko Rice and Trossard for creativity and fluidity in that midfield instead of sluggish static Kai and Juninho.

Sad but we ain’t winning this with this line up, everrr.

    Sorry.

  17. Good to see Ben White come to his senses. He’s dyed his hair back to its natural colour. At least he won’t stand out like dog balls

    1. We Shall be playing with nine men. (Virtually excluding the toothless Havertz and Nketiah). Good luck boys. Though I don’t think we have any plans to smile after 90mins). Hope Rice gets a full body massage for carrying the weight of the intense physical match awaiting him.

  18. So the big German is task with bossing things in the middle of the Park, let’s hope he uses his arial supremacy and physicality to telling effect.

  19. Unless the players fight effortlessly, on paper Arsenal are already losing this game straight away 😒💔

    #COYG

  20. Nothing against Jorginho but it’s difficult to watch him when Partey is in the same team.

    1. No football, but a lot of hard work. Not our best midfield. We need a bit of Saka or Martinelli magic.

    1. GunneRay it’s seems you are seeing a different game i think Havertz is having a good game so far put’s it’s okay your opinion though

  21. January is just around the corner so if Chelsea have another reject nobody wants you can bet Arsenal we jump in and buy him.

  22. But why has is Arteta decided to have 2 goalies on the bench for the mach? Ramsdale and Hein.

    1. Newcastle should already be down to 10 man with guimaraes elbowing jorginho. As usual we are the one that’s gonna be down to 10 man.

          1. This is the best contribution by Havertz in his Arsenal career by getting 3 Newcastle players booked in 1 challenge. I think Arteta needs to take him off as he could get a second yellow and go.

        1. Havertz would have been easy red if he actually made contact with his leading foot which was studs up but he missed and hit the player with his other leg.

Guimares foul is a deliberate kick to the head with the forearm/elbow so a red all day long. Xhaka does that and he’s banned for 10 games.

  23. Honestly… one of the best halves we’ve played this season. We’ve completely matched Newcastle’s intensity and have gotten under their skin. It’s been a long time since I actually saw Arsenal awake and ready for a fight and I wasn’t sure if we were going to bring that energy. If we were soft today we would’ve been battered by now.

  24. So far so good. I think Arsenal (Saka and Martinelli) need to run at the Newcastle players on a yellow card. Rice has been amazing. With a bit more positive play, we can win this.

  25. The West Ham game, may have prepared us properly for this one as Arsenal seems to be matching them man to man physically in the middle.
Not sure Odegaard could managed this but creativity will be needed.

  26. Gotta say I love this nasty side of Havertz lol. He’s not timid tonight.Very aggressive. I hope he doesn’t get another yellow though.

      1. I’m not just referring to that tackle. He’s been very aggressive generally. I don’t mind a bit of that.

  27. When people say refs aren’t cheats then please look at the jorginho elbow. I won’t say anymore as to not upset the twats of the club

    1. That should have been a yellow for sure but ref seems to not care that could have easily course concussion to Jorginho

  28. As predicted, Newcastle used their pace, strength and aerial ability to make chances

I just didn’t like their drama. Fortunately, the referee was fair enough

Havertz played well, but he must be really careful because Newcastle would most likely target him for fouls. I hope he can survive till the 70th minute, then Vieira could come in

  29. Yeah Gunsmoke Martin could have easily been brushed off almiron is the only player who plays soft in that Newcastle team.

  30. Havertz is frustrating to watch. He had open players inside the box twice and his pass was behind them.
He must have been frustrated with himself cause that tackle is really stupid.
I hope we keep a clean sheet and hopefully get a chance to win it.

  31. Our players have risen to the challenge of the physical battles and I must say I am really impressed. We are playing with superb controlled aggression and showing better technical superiority against those brutish Newcastle players and they seem unable to cope with our intensity.

Martinelli needs to track back really well to double up against Trippier and Almiron. If we effectively nullify those quick interchanges on the right side, I am pretty sure they will hardly trouble our goalie. That right channel is where they build most of their attacking moves from.

  32. When will we get referees who protect players from the tackles we have seen from Newcastle so far?
This is like watching Stoke City under Pullis once again.
Well done to The Arsenal players for standing up and giving as good as they get, but the level of refereeing gets worse and worse – while VAR condones the madness.
If we come away with no major injuries, I’ll be amazed! /

  33. TWO blatant red cards by ref and useless pointless VAR. . Havertz and his crazy out of contriol mlunge and then Bruno for his fist to the head. I have no faith at all in match officials and as for VAR, well, polite words fail me!

  34. What the hell did Havertz eat for breakfast, he seems intent of taking someone’s leg home with him tonight along a red card. Where was that aggressiveness all season?

  35. Callum Wilson and Burns should have had red cards. I’m not sure about Havertz challenge, he was late but it was a one footed challenge..

  36. Please explain this piece of shit VAR?????????????

Why wasn’t it offside? Why wasn’t it a foul on Gabriel????

  37. It can’t be disallowed because it’s Arsenal. So obviously should not have been given but here we go again

  38. Difficult to know who to bring on
Over all the team have done ok but I’ve just seen that Zinchenko is coming on in place of White. Tomi to the right

  39. Shame if we don’t even get a point. Thought we won the midfield battle and our attackers let us down. We are wasting both martinelli and sakas talent by not playing with an elite forward

  40. Also I’m fine with the goal being given. Idk what Raya is supposed to be doing there. Again hasn’t shown he’s an upgrade on Ramsdale at all. Gabriel should be standing up to Joelinton looked like he was halfway already falling down

    1. It’s offside or it’s a foul. If it’s not a foul it’s offside 100 if it’s not offside it’s a foul 100. Raya was the offside line not Gabriel.

      1. The individual events could be debated had they not happened simultaneously at that point it’s one or the other unless you jump through insane mental hoops

      2. Whether it’s a foul is up for debate. I don’t think joelinton does anything wrong. It does look like Gordon is offside tho but I think the official reason they gave was they can’t tell when the ball comes to joelinton. But tbh Gordon looks offside by a country mile for that whole movement. So yea I think they did mess up with the offside

        1. If the ball doesn’t come off joelinton then it has to be a foul on Gabriel as his two hands on his back have impacted him playing the ball hence my point. If joelinton never touches the ball it’s a 100 foul.

  41. Corrupt VAR which refused to look at the ball going over the goal line. FIRST. Everything else was irrelevant since the ball was OUT OF PLAY.

    OBVIOUSLY WE are cheated!

    1. Unfortunately if you can see a gap between the line and the ball it’s not necessarily over the line (which I don’t agree with) but if the arc of the ball is over the line then it’s not out. Take a look at corners, nearly everyone you can see daylight between ball and line. The rule should be if the ball is not physically touching the line it’s out!

    2. @jon, that ball was over the line. I wish these refs are punished for these errors. There should be a performance review for these refs weekly. Once you make silly mistakes like this one, you are banned from officiating for 4 months.

    1. He’s been like this for several games now. Been getting away with it. But let’s remember we went into this season without a single player to replace or challenge him

    2. Yes. Saka needs some time off. Arteta should go for Ivan Toney in January. Even if it is a loan deal. We need a top quality CF that is proven in the EPL.

  42. Does any sensible and rational human still believe VAR weekly debacle is a mistake? Before this game, I was asking myself if this game will be dominated by VAR and referring errors and alas my fears were proven true.

If no English referee is not good enough to ref this beautiful game, is it wrong to consider bringing better from other European countries, e.g., Spain, Italy, France? Just the demographics of EPL referees says a lot about the league. Good luck to fans who still believe in the footballing institution and still hope for fairness in today’s soccer dominated with Arab states funding.

    1. It’s a valid point you bring up. With the riches the league has and the demographics of players in the league why is the ref pool such a closed club?

  43. Whistle bang on 8 added despite the delays in added time, done with football completely it’s always been corrupt to a degree but now its the UAE/Saudi league. Embarrassing

    1. Same happened last year against Newcastle with the clear penalties not given. Liverpool were looking a threat to City they get knocked down at Spurs. Joke.

    1. Vieria trosard raya Gabriel very nervy defender just look at the size of pope jorginho shocking player zinchenko thinks he’s Liam Brady arteta makes subs too late KAI stealing a living

      1. Either way, the league has become shit. I’ve no more interest in watching such low standards, and low quality games every week.

  44. As I said many times, Eddie is rubbish and has no business at this level. Kai had space to run with the ball unlike most games, but his last pass was always bad and he killed off a few good attacks. With those two we had little chance of scoring, so it was down to keeping a clean sheet, which rediculous VAR decided against.
