Viktor Gyokeres is Arsenal’s new number 14, a shirt number that carries significant weight due to its association with one of the most iconic players in the club’s history. While Arsenal have long been linked with some of the finest talents in world football, their acquisition of Gyokeres in this transfer window reflects a clear ambition to strengthen the squad in pursuit of silverware.

Mikel Arteta’s team is determined to compete on all fronts, and bringing in a prolific forward is a strategic move aimed at achieving that goal. Arsenal spent several months working to secure Gyokeres’s signature, following his remarkable goalscoring form at Sporting Club, where he netted over 90 goals in two seasons.

A Shirt Number with Great Expectations

Every football supporter acknowledges Gyokeres’s ability to find the back of the net, and there is widespread expectation that he will deliver strong performances in North London. Although his primary role at the Emirates will be to score goals, his new shirt number has naturally sparked comparisons with former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who made the number 14 iconic.

However, Gyokeres is keen to distance himself from such parallels. He recognises Henry’s greatness but prefers to focus on his own path, determined to make his mark in his own way. As quoted by ESPN, he stated, “It’s not really my intention to be compared with what he’s achieved in his career. Especially here. I just want to do my own thing and show my qualities. Of course he was an amazing player, but different from me. I just want to try to do my own thing.”

Looking to the Future

There is no doubt that Arsenal view Gyokeres as a crucial part of their efforts to challenge for major honours this season. With the ability to score consistently and the mentality to carve out his own legacy, he arrives at the club with both promise and purpose. Supporters will be hoping his goals make a decisive difference and help to bring trophies back to the Emirates.

  1. When you take the shirt of our greatest player, or at least one of them, there are going to be comparison. But Gyokeres can make a name for himself

  2. For me,Geokeres is already better than Henry because he scored over 50 goals in a season and Henry didn’t score as many in a season in his entire career.Still havn’t forgiven him for costing us the 2006 champions league.

    1. I hope you’re not serious. Unfortunately, we may read about your post on JA for years to come.

    2. Matthew, while I was disappointed Henry never scored in the CL Final in ’06, I wouldn’t blame him for the defeat.

Henry has done something that I doubt Gyokeres will ever do, and that will be finishing as his countries top scorer when winning the World Cup, which Henry did in ’98.

    3. Matthew,

Two points. Point one, have you hit the bottle early this week. Henry was far more than just a Goal scorer, the man was a one man front line at times.

Point two, He never cost us the 2006 CL, a certain Goalkeeper by the name of Lehman did that. 🤷‍♂️

  3. Are we seriously having this talk about Henry n gyokeres, Henry is the greatest and we hope every new intake might be greater. Till then let’s embrace gyokeres and sell martinelli for eze, simons and alike

  4. People forget that Eddie too wore the iconic no 14!
Henry is a legend in his own right and can never be replaced by any player in our memory.
Victor has to prove himself in a Arsenal jersey which he will do, because he is a passionate player.
Berta is assembling a squad of very good players, Noni being the only weak link.
Want these players to win the UCL for Berta.

    1. *Madueke* our weak link? Crazy talk. I could name two more quite easily than a young, creative rotation winger.

You’ll change your tune by end of the season.

  5. Henry was a true legend at Arsenal and will remain so forever. It is great that Gyokeres wants to carve out his own name and not be compared to Henry. This shows both ambition and confidence and this bodes very well for Arsenal. Hope Gyokeres succeeds in his ambition and brings glory to Arsenal.

  6. Gyokeres may (well) not want the comparison but, unfortunately, he’s going to get it. It’s bound to happen.

I don’t know why Arsenal didn’t give him the No 9 shirt currently allocated to Jesus though. Jesus hardly ever plays and scores even less frequently so a shirt usually won by a striker would be better suited to Gyokeres, I would have thought.

However, if Gyokeres thinks he may be in for unfair criticism he should consider Lamine Yamal at F C Barcelona. Hugely talented though he is, LY has been given the No. 10 shirt there, previously worn by Lionel Messi, often considered to be the GOAT (Greatest of all Time). Now that’s really something to try and live up to!
