Troy Deeney gives his honest assessment of Gyokeres move to Arsenal

Troy Deeney has shared his thoughts on Viktor Gyokeres following the striker’s move to Arsenal from Sporting Club this summer. The Swedish forward enjoyed excellent form during his time in Portugal, scoring nearly 100 goals over two seasons and attracting interest from several top European clubs. Despite offers from other sides, Gyokeres opted for Arsenal and reportedly went on strike to push through the transfer, securing his move to London.

Gyokeres’ Challenge in the Premier League

Fans of the Gunners will be hoping that Gyokeres can replicate his prolific scoring record in the Premier League, but Deeney believes that expectations need to be tempered. As quoted by The Sun, he commented, “My frustration is always that these guys are instantly put on a pedestal.

“People don’t realise the difference between playing in Portugal and playing for Arsenal or Manchester United or Liverpool.

“Gyokeres’ numbers are fantastic. You can never deny the goals he scored in Portugal — it’s up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi levels.

“But he had a lot of chances because Sporting dominated the ball.”

Deeney’s perspective highlights the challenges that players often face when moving from one league to another. The Premier League is renowned for its pace, intensity and defensive organisation, which can make it difficult for even the most talented forwards to immediately reproduce their previous scoring exploits.

Expectations for Arsenal

Despite the potential step up in competition, Arsenal supporters will be eager to see Gyokeres adapt quickly and contribute to the team’s attacking output. The club has sought to strengthen its forward line, and the Swedish international is expected to bring energy, movement and a goal threat to complement the existing squad.

While Deeney’s warning emphasises the difficulty of transitioning from the Portuguese top flight to one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, Gyokeres’ past performances indicate that he possesses the talent and determination to make an impact. Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can adjust swiftly and help the Gunners achieve their objectives this season.

  1. That’s true. Portugal’s league is not as good and tough as the Premier League. And it’s tough to transition from one league to Another. It can be tough transitioning from one club to another too.
And sometimes players fail to succeed ie Pepe
But that doesn’t mean that Gyokeres can’t do well here.
He’s a talented player and hopefully he can show it well during the season.

    1. I agree.

The proof, one way or the other, will be in what he actually does for Arsenal. No player is guaranteed success at any new club, but talent will often shine through, and I think it will in his case.

  2. A statement of obvious fact isn’t an assessment. If his numbers are correct and Sporting made chances left and right, all this tells us is Gyokeres is good at using chances. To make sense of what he might bring to the table, you have to consider other variables. Something that Deeney won’t do, because he’s just a pundit, nor an expert.

  3. Love the way everyone is focused on Gyokeres. Let them talk. Meanwhile our other attackers are going under the radar and there’s less pressure on them. I hope the focus to continue on the pitch as well. Will leave plenty of space for his teammates to score plenty of goals.

  4. I’m surprised because these so called pundits olny focuses on players for Arsenal.Their shallow mindset will make us stronger
