Leandro Trossard was a second-half substitute when Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 this weekend and his assist for the third goal meant that he reached a mini landmark in his Arsenal career. The arrival of a number of players has brought increased competition for places in the Arsenal starting XI. None more so than the left wing, which has seen three different starters in the last three games. Eberechi Eze came in for Gabriel Martinelli versus Forest, with Arsenal flexing their newfound strength in depth. Leandro Trossard came on for Eze in the 79th minute and his impact was swift as he created the third goal a minute later.
Trossard hits 50 goal contributions
That assist took the Belgian to 50 goal contributions for Arsenal in all competitions. The former Brighton man has scored 28 goals and provided 22 assists in Arsenal colours since making a move in January 2023. Perhaps the most striking detail concerning his tally is that only Bukayo Saka has contributed more since his arrival. His most productive campaign in front of goal was in 2023-24, with the Belgian scoring 17 goals in 46 appearances. While there was growing discontent surrounding performances last season, the Belgian remains a crucial member of the Arsenal squad. His ability to impact games from the bench will be an incredible asset at Arteta’s disposal and we have already gotten a glimpse of it this campaign.
A future in question
In recognition of his contributions thus far, Arsenal offered the Belgian a new contract over the summer. Though it was not a traditional contract extension, a pay rise was in the deal instead. This came amidst growing speculation linking the Belgian with a move away. A change of representatives over the summer also added fuel to the fire, with the likes of Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and even Brentford all being linked with a move for the player. Beşiktaş were even rumoured to have made a bid recently, but the player will likely remain at the club. That said, following the arrival of a number of key players and the fact that his contract is up in 2027, a move away is probably in the not-too-distant future.

There are a few on here who sees what he can do BUT there are many on here who still shout for Martinellis blind runs and poor crosses, over technical ability and actually doing something. He was on 5 minutes the other day before creating another goal. Something Martinelli take 5 hours and still doesn’t. Some asking why he got a payrise and why we kept him? Well open your eyes. He does things. And he has a football brain. Which many of our players lack.
Yes, he’s still a very good player, which is why he got a deserved pay increase to bring him in line with others in the squad without tying him to a longer contract.(according to The Athletic).
I can’t think what his nationality might be though.
Why would they not tie him to a longer contract Jax?
Mr Kronkie must be scratching his head at some of our contract negotiations…. I certainly am.
The contract renewal was before Eze was acquired and I believe that they wanted to make certain that Trossard did not try to force through a transfer away. Also, I read somewhere that they wanted to make good on a promise of better terms they had made to him sometime in the not too distant past based on their judgment of his performances. As he will be turning 31 y/o in early December, they didn’t want to go so far as to also lengthen the original contract duration especially on the improved wages.
Without judging whether these actions were appropriate or not, that’s my take on it from the outside looking in.
I do believe if they were already within £7m or so of where they wanted to be for Eze, that perhaps his release clause should have been triggered and the Trossard situation handled immediately afterward. Again, just my opinion from what I could see of the sequence of events.
Back to accusing professional football players of having no footballing brains I see Reggie.
Let’s take your argument step by step :
1. Martinelli has no football brain.
2. The Brazilian FA have no footballing brain, because they select him to represent their country.
3. The same (2) goes for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.
4. The current value placed on Martinelli is around the £40-£50 million figure…. those who suggest this have, according to you, no footballing brain.
5. Anyone who wants to buy Martinelli cannot have a footballing brain, following your “logic.”
There seems to be a recurring theme here Reggie, but I’m not sure where the missing footballing brain should be allocated.
As for giving someone a payrise, with no recognised benefits or conditions to the club itself?
Now THAT’S what I would call being a little nieve… I nearly typed “brain dead” but I realize I’m not a professional in these matters.

In your post to mention people asking why he got a pay rise, I am one of them. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a good player. But don’t tell me that the club were right in giving a player a rise who didn’t even extend his contract. That to me is just another example of the club’s continued strange decisions regards players wages.
If they now want to sell him in the future, any potential buyer may now bulk at what they would have to pay him in wages. And with our clubs woeful record regards player sales in recent years, makes the decision to give him a rise a strange decision.
As I’ve said in a previous post, that one poster on here even suggested that he was given a rise was maybe to keep him motivated. Well if that the case, every other fringe player should be knocking on the managers door demanding a rise to keep them motivated.🤦♂️
Ken, my opinion on Martinelli is he lacks a brain to actually make the difference to actually make use of his talent, that has gone backward, WHY? BUT many on here have called fir Martinelli to start on the left and over Trossard in the past, blind the fact that Trossard has been better. My post was supporting the fact that people had forgotten we had an option better or at least as good, that people didn’t or didn’t want to see. I personally do not call people names on here, unless they call out first, then, i will give it back. You didn’t actually call me brain dead ( i don’t think and hope you wouldn’t lower yourself, i would like to think you are more intelligent than that) but for me to say Martinelli has not got a footballing brain is an observation and not slagging him off. It is what in my opinion is holding him back. But then again, if something was not holding him back, he would STILL be a starter for ARSENAL. Back to Trossard who has got a footballing brain, he does more, while he is on the pitch and maybe that is why he was recognised by a payrise, even though he is approaching his twilight years.

If you believe that Martinelli hasn’t unlocked his full potential Reggie, I wouldn’t have been able to put points 2,3,4 and 5 forward.

Did Chelsea not see the potential in both players when they sold them?
I’m absolutely convinced that, with the proper training / coaching, Martinelli will become a top tier player and Arteta seems to be of the same opinion.
I believe Trossard has reached his peak (a bloody good peak of course) but that’s it – while Martinelli has his best years ahead of him – whether that’s with The Arsenal or elsewhere, only time will tell… but no footballing brain is not correct in my opinion.
A keep telling fans Tossard is probably the most intelligent player at Arsenal.
He is Gunsmoke and we probably should have signed him 5 years ago to have got his best years.
We were lucky he fell out with De Zerbi when he did. Trossard is one of the toughest, skilled and most intelligent players we have imo. I never get tired of seeing him put Bukayo one v one and opening up the opposition with those long cross pitch diagonals he launches to the right wing when we’re playing out from the back. I have to admit that I love it when he effectively blocks out players much larger than him on corners.
