Following a series of new additions to the squad, Mikel Arteta now faces the task of preparing Arsenal for what promises to be another demanding season. With expectations continuing to rise, the manager must integrate the fresh arrivals into a system capable of competing at the highest level both domestically and in Europe.

Over the past three campaigns, Arsenal have consistently finished as the second-best team in England. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the intense level of competition in the Premier League. While some rivals may choose to mock their inability to secure the top spot, the reality is that Arteta has delivered an admirable level of consistency and progression.

Arteta’s Tactical Adjustments

Arsenal have also remained strong contenders in European competitions, reinforcing the progress made under Arteta’s leadership. The club’s recent transfer activity reflects this upward trajectory. Andrea Berta has played a significant role in securing key signings, helping to bolster the squad’s overall depth. As a result, Arsenal’s strength in depth is now regarded with envy by several clubs across Europe.

The work, however, is far from finished. Arteta understands that the process of building a title-winning side extends beyond signings. According to Caught Offside, the Arsenal manager has already begun making tactical adjustments to ensure his latest additions are well utilised, particularly striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres Central to Arsenal’s Plans

Gyokeres arrives with an impressive reputation, having scored nearly 100 goals across two seasons at his previous club. If he can replicate that level of productivity in North London, Arsenal could become a formidable force in both the Premier League and European competitions. Arteta is reportedly reshaping certain elements of his system to maximise the striker’s strengths.

Gyokeres has demonstrated a natural goal-scoring ability, and it is now up to the club to create the conditions that allow him to flourish. With the right structure and support, he has the potential to make a major impact this season, as Arsenal aim to push even closer to silverware.

    1. A false 9 tends to come deep, team mates play through not to or for them, Yok will hang around shoulder of the last man, which will stand out as a change from Yoks first start.

    2. Some of the tweaks were apparent against Tottenham. Throughput pre season, there’s been an increase in switches of play and balls over the top from deep rather than just playing out from the back like it has been over the past few seasons. We ranked near bottom in the league last season for switches of play. Going by what I’ve seen in preseason,I expect that to change significantly.

There’s also more directness and incision through the middle of the park, particularly when Zubimendi plays. We are also moving the ball much faster and taking fewer touches to get the ball into the final third quickly. All that needs to happen now is converting these quick transitions into chances.

The fact that Newcastle marginally had more possession than us speaks volumes-that just never happens! It tells me that we are surrendering a bit of control and possession for more directness and faster tempo. Even the signings-Gyokeres,Zubimendi,Madueke point to a shift in tactics because of their ability to be more direct in their passing/running.

The choice of the coach signed to replace Carlos Cuesta also points to change. One of the things Gabriel Heinze is known for is vertical play through quick transitions and attacking through direct, purposeful passing.

Some of these tweaks should become more apparent with time.

      1. I suspect Heinze will be a hugely important and beneficial presence in our club in part because of what you mentioned.

  1. I’ve not seen any so called ‘tweaks’ in the games we’ve seen so far, most attacks going through Saka on the right, nothing new on the left, lots of backwards and sideways passing and Raya still closer to the centre spot than his own goal.

    1. I imagine most of these changes are centered around personnel (Zubimendi and Gyokeres in particular). Watch out for when these two are on the pitch. One thing that has changed irrespective of the new signings is the long balls and switching of play-we are playing more of those.

The left side is still an issue but I think it’s something the new signings will help with. Zubimendi is comfortable playing passes to the left side of the pitch as well as the right, unlike Partey who had a right sided bias. Similarly,Gyokeres can go left or right to support the winger, unlike Havertz who has a right sided bias. Will Madueke play on the left? Will we get a new left winger?

I think the new signings will play a big role in improving our left side. MLS is also being instructed to stay wide more often, from what I’ve seen. That said, I think we will always rely on the right more, because that’s just where our best player is. Virtually all teams rely on one flank more than the other. Liverpool for instance, rely on the right more, because that’s where Salah is.

  2. The whole approach to attacking game should be imminent BUT BUT BUT. The 4. 2. 3. 1 has potential openings for defensive errors if the opposite play the same pattern leading to getting scored against much earlier hence putting pressure on the attackers. The coach must be wary of this and he able to strengthen the midfield. Along the way, the team might lose the top position due to scores against. Otherwise it’s a good approach may be better than 4, 5, 1. Should the coach try this one too. AC MILAN thave used itcandxl works for them. It all depends on the qualities of the team members.

    1. I agree with the professor. The system tweaks have left us less solid and conceding too many goals.

It’s flirting now with a 2 7 1 system – that won’t yield nearly enough clean sheets to get at all close to a major trophy. The tweaking has already gone wrong. We are not building on three second place finishes, we start this season further away from major honours due to inability to keep clean sheets – awful now at defending corners is just one symptom how change in forward and midfield personnel, has weakened Arsenal defensively.

Of course we will win the 2 remaining friendlies – at home against weaker opponents – but the point to take is the performance, will it show the same goal conceding weaknesses of 2025 so far.

Arsenal desperately need some battling clean sheets once the season proper starts.

  3. Have not seen tweaks, only a rinse and repeat of last 2 years. New players running the same plays is not a “tweak.”

Against spuds same stale tactics, same stale play, same stale results.

I saw us struggle to create anything against their low block, what new tweaks?

Every other attack was the same right hand side. What new tweaks?

I’ll believe it when I see us attack directly, play more through the middle, and utilize Gyokeres as he makes runs into the box.

  4. Playing a 4-4-2 system is more suitable à this time until Arsenal signs EZE
With Havertz and Gyokeres up front

A second line of Zubimendi, Rice, Odeggard and Saka

And a Defense of White, Saliba, Calafiori and the young kid from Hale end

For Goal either one can play with no preference as Arteta could choose the one.
If Calafiori is unfit, the new signing Mosquera should get the nod.

  5. It appears that we have brought in some game changers in this window.

it seems we will have a starting midfield of

Zubimendi, Rice and Odegaard in the upcoming season.

It looks good, on the surface!

But if you take a closer look, none of these three are particularly “quick”

I am worried that this lack of pace will be our Achilles heal this season.

I fear that both Liverpool and Chelsea will exploit this lack of pace up the middle.

Remember PSG are a very pacy team…..

I am not sure if the introduction of Eze will fix this problem, but let’s wait and see
