Opinion: Can Gyökeres Rival Haaland and Salah for the Golden Boot?

Former Manchester City and Premier League striker Sergio Aguero has tipped Viktor Gyökeres to be in firm contention for the Golden Boot come the end of the campaign.

The Gunners sought to add a prolific centre-forward this summer and after some twists and turns, they finally completed the long-awaited acquisition of Viktor Gyökeres, much to the delight of the fanbase. The former Coventry man has already opened his account, albeit in a friendly, and many will hope he can hit the ground running against Manchester United. The Swedish international was brought in to score goals, but there have been questions over how quickly he can adapt to Premier League football.

Aguero backs Gyökeres to challenge the elite

As reported by Stake.com, Aguero has tipped the Swede to “shake things up” in the Golden Boot race, potentially rivalling the likes of Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland.

Quizzed on who will win the award, the former City man said:
“I’d like Haaland to win awards because that means he’s sure to have scored a lot for City. Salah’s name should be brought up when we talk about Golden Boot, same with Isak. And players arriving to the Premier League with a massive tally like Gyökeres at Arsenal have a chance to shake things up.”

Arsenal fans have already had a glimpse of the Swede’s finishing ability against Athletic Club. He took his goal extremely well and should have grabbed another if not for the upright. His movement also caught the eye, something the Gunners will look to make the most of in the months ahead.

Arsenal ‘shaping up nicely’ for title challenge

During the interview, Aguero also tipped the Gunners to be in the title race again this season, suggesting Arsenal have been “shaping up nicely” ahead of the new campaign. This confidence likely stems from their strong transfer window, which saw them strengthen in key areas and secure long-term deals for important players.

Do you think Gyökeres can challenge Haaland and Salah for the Golden Boot this season Gooners? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I think he will be lucky to score 15 premier league goals this season, Portugal isn’t the premier league so that’s my thought 🤔

    1. That doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t score 20+ goals
He also didn’t have players around him in Portugal with the calibre of Saka, Odergaard, Rice, Zubimendi, Martinelli etc.

  2. My expectation for Gyokeres is at least 20 premier league goals.
If he goes ahead and wins the golden boot then fine and good for him.

What I crave for the most is a premier league or champions league trophy.

If we can’t win those 2 then fa cup will still be accepted.

    1. Aren’t you the one who always posts your chosen lineup whenever you’re commenting? Nice to see you write something other than another lineup.

Anyway, I agree it’s about the trophies we win but I’m not sure I agree the FA cup alone will suffice. There’s currently an article on Sky Sports saying that Arteta now has nowhere to hide given the squad depth we now possess.

      1. Nice observation but I only post my chosen line up when the article is related to player selections.

I say the fa cup as my 3rd preference because it’s still a cup and we will get to extend our record of being the highest holders of the cup by making it 15 times winning it.

Arteta has no more excuse indeed. He has spent about a billion pounds and he has a striker now so most fans won’t accept any excuse for not winning a trophy.

Maybe the excuse from Arteta fanatics might be that he preferred Sesko and Berta gave him Gyokeres. 😂

  3. I don’t expect him to win the golden boot in his first year.
But I think it is possible he can score 20 goals or more

  4. Oh dear. Here we go. The guy literally hasn’t kicked a ball in the EPL yet and it’s already down to his chances in the Golden Boot.

Obviously, he was bought to score the goals that Arsenal wasn’t scoring otherwise (“strikers goals”) because they didn’t have a purpose-built striker available. I hope in that role he’ll be able to get, say, 15-20 in the EPL in his first season, perhaps a few more elsewhere, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves with talk of a Golden Boot win.

  5. I don’t think so. Arteta has always preferred spreading the goals around and I doubt that will change. Rather than chasing personal glory, it’s much better to play for the team- indeed we saw Gyokeres do just that for our second goal.

I also expect Gyokeres and Kai to share minutes which will limit the number of goals each can score. I genuinely believe both of these guys can get around 15 goals each. If they do,that would be a fine return.

Unpopular opinion but it’s Saka I’m backing to break the 20 goals barrier. He’ll for sure be playing 90 minutes for most games and our new game model is designed to get him and the LW more goalscoring opportunities – we saw our wingers play more centrally and closer to goal.

That said, I expect Haaland to run away with the golden boot if he stays fit throughout the season. Salah will share the goalscoring burden with other forwards Liverpool have brought and that could reduce his output- he’ll also miss over a month because of the AFCON tournament.

    1. By the way it will be interesting to see who takes our penalties. That has an impact on the numbers. Not that we’ve been good at winning them- well, except the young Dowman who I don’t expect to feature much.

  6. He sure will. Though he’ll have some spells where the goals seem to be hard to come by, but i back him to put up high numbers. Not just the league but in the UCL as well.

  7. Gyokores will not only win the golden boot but also win us the Treble -Premier league, Champions league and also the FA Cup. I predict he will bang in 50 goals at least in all competitions with the service he will get, from the Arsenal team.

He is an absolute monster of a forward and will humble Haaland, irk Isak and surpass Salah, winning himself a pair of Golden boots and a Golden hat. He’s winning us the Treble 💪

    Come on Gyokores! 🏆🏆🏆 ❤️🤍

  8. He’ll bang in the goals if Mikel Arteta repents from his side ways slow paced passing football. If he doesn’t then Gyokeres will be turned into a spectator like as he did Auba.
