Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has found a new club, just weeks after leaving the Gunners and becoming embroiled in serious controversy.

The Ghanaian international departed Arsenal at the end of June following the expiry of his contract, ending a five-year spell in North London. His exit came just before the midfield arrivals of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, both signed to reinforce the midfield following Partey and Jorginho’s departures.

Partey to join Villarreal after medical

According to David Ornstein, Partey is now set to join La Liga side Villarreal as a free agent, having agreed a two-year contract. The 32-year-old has reportedly already undergone a medical and will sign a deal that runs until 2027.

Champions League football is believed to have played a key role in his decision, with the move expected to be confirmed just days before Villarreal face Arsenal in a friendly on 6th August. Partey is not expected to feature in that game.

The midfielder is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5th August. In early July, he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following a three-year investigation. Partey denies all the charges.

The case has reignited criticism of Arsenal’s handling of the situation, with many questioning the club’s decision to play the midfielder regularly during the investigation and reports that they had attempted to extend his contract earlier this year.

Partey’s time at Arsenal

Thomas Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 and made 167 appearances across five seasons, scoring nine goals. Throughout his time at the Emirates, he played in multiple midfield roles and was a regular starter when fit.

His time at the club has now come to a controversial close, and all eyes will be on Villarreal, both on and off the pitch, as the next chapter of his career begins.

What are your thoughts on Partey’s time at Arsenal and this latest development?

  1. When he was fit, he was certainly effective at Arsenal. However, I’m glad that he has moved on.

  2. With him we won nothing – not even the Carabao Cup. Will be forgotten sooner than later. People are judged by achievements, not sentiments. Good player and good luck to him in whatever he does.
Should he return back to the Emirates as a rival player, will definitely clap for him after the final whistle. Not his fault, he was made to play at RB and did pick up some injuries there.

    1. I think your comment is more an indictment of the manager and the management at Arsenal. Apart from Saka and Martinelli, none of our players has won anything here and could all be easily forgotten
