Opinion: Should Arsenal now rest Bukayo Saka more often?

Bukayo Saka has begun the new season with yet another injury setback, prompting questions over whether he may be becoming an injury-prone player. The winger has been central to Arsenal’s rise in recent years, consistently delivering in attack and carrying a significant share of responsibility for the team’s progress. Losing him for any extended period would represent a major blow for the club.

Saka’s playing style is both dynamic and direct, which frequently exposes him to heavy challenges. This repeated physical treatment has taken its toll, and injuries have become a recurring theme.

Arsenal’s Dependence on Saka

The importance of Saka to Arsenal cannot be overstated. Last season, when he was sidelined by a long-term injury, the Gunners lost momentum in the Premier League title race. His absence coincided with a dip in form from MartinOdegaard, leaving the team without their usual fluency and attacking edge on the right wing.

This season has already begun with Saka unavailable once again, underlining the growing concern about his durability. The risk of him becoming overworked is evident, and managing his fitness must now be a priority for the club.

A Case for Better Rotation

Fortunately for Arsenal, the squad now has greater depth than in previous seasons, with several players capable of filling Saka’s role when required. This gives the club an opportunity to regulate his workload more carefully. It may be wise to avoid playing him in every competition, particularly in the early stages of the campaign.

One option would be to limit his involvement in Champions League group matches, allowing him to focus primarily on the Premier League. Similarly, resting him in domestic cup competitions until the later rounds could help preserve his fitness for decisive fixtures. Such a strategy would reduce the risk of burnout while ensuring he remains available for the games that matter most.

Arsenal’s long-term ambitions rely heavily on Saka’s contributions, but his availability is equally crucial. By protecting him through careful rotation, the club can safeguard one of their most valuable assets while still competing strongly on all fronts.

  1. Of course they should rest him or bench him more this season, otherwise what’s the point in investing in cover. There was always going to be a likelihood of Saka picking up the kind of injury that he did against Palace last season.

He barely had any rest in the previous three seasons, and that’s bound to catch up eventually. With the squad at Arteta’s disposal now, he’s got no excuses regarding rotation.

  2. No. He’s supposed to be Arsenal’s Mohamad Salah, who’s played more than 400 games and scored 245 goals for Liverpool

If Saka becomes injury-prone or unfit easily, it would be time to sell him when his value is still high

We’ve already got Madueke, Nwaneri and Dowman who can play the inverted-RW role very well, so Saka should extend his contract soon or leave in the summer

    1. @Gai, Let Arteta manage Saka well, I don’t think he is injury prone. At the moment he is the best we had at Rwing. Dowman not there yet still young, Madueke is a good option but his goals returns not compared to BSaka bcos he can’t score with two legs like BSaka.
Madueke doesn’t help defensively when the team is without the ball. Even Tuchel complained about that. Imo, Saka should be managed he seem to be more targeted than Salah.

    2. @GotanIdea, I dont think we can sideline Saka. He is our best player along with Odegaard and we cannot forget his immense contribution to the Arsenal cause. We have to rest and rotate him wherever and whenever possible so that he is fit and fresh for crucial fixtures. Also, dont forget he is on the receiving end of bad tackles and the referees are not doing much to protect him.

  3. Surely Saka should be afforded adequate rest this season, it will helps to keep him sharp and aid his development.

    1. @Anil, That is totally wrong. He is not injury prone, he is overworked. Arteta must manage his minutes properly and make optimum use of his talent. After all, Saka is human and cannot play indefinitely.

  4. I don’t care what you do to saka and the RW, I just don’t want to see martinelli in that LW or anywhere again

  5. Considering that when Saliba got injured our highly paid coach relied on the player’s own assessment instead of the highly paid medical team, tells us a lot why injuries are rampant in the team

  6. Absolutely should rest him more. If nothing else, will keep him fresher and sharper. We have options now. Salah a freak in more ways than one, wouldn’t benchmark to him.

  7. I think it’s a brilliant idea to rest him more often bcos his consistent injuries are signs that its an internal fatigue. The more he’s overused and if not managed wisely.i think Saka won’t enjoy his career.
Arteta should manage him like he’s the heart and soul of Arsenal not destroy him by playing all the times.Arteta have to many options on that position that can also deliver.
He shouldn’t be compared to anyone. He is unquie player.
And remember that Michael Owen soccer career was destroyed bcos of series of injuries.i belive he regrets not being managed wisely.
Saka will also regret like Michael Owen if he plays all the matches.
Sometime Arteta should not start him but rather substitute him in 2nd half.
saka should be managed differently from the other players.
That’s my opinion I hope it’s gets to him and the Arsenal managerial board.
    God bless the Gunners🏆🔥💯

  8. All this talk about selling Saka, have you guys lost your minds?

I ma sure we will see this season, if we just give him a rest every now and then against the lesser teams, we won’t be seeing these frequent injuries.

He is arguably the best player we have (which I know is a completely different debate in itself).

  9. I have been saying from a long time Saka needs rest and rotation. He is overworked and now injuries are taking their toll. He should not play in Cup competitions until we reach the latter stages and also be rotated in PL and CL games. Saka is too important a player for Arsenal to be not playing in tough fixtures and Arteta must do everything possible to protect Saka.
