Opinion: Why Arsenal can win the Champions League

Arsenal have been handed a compelling draw in the league phase of the Champions League as they aim to improve on last season’s campaign, which ended in the semifinal stage. Since their return to Europe’s premier competition in the 2023/2024 season, the Gunners have consistently demonstrated their strength, reaching the quarterfinals before last year’s deeper run.

Under the guidance of Mikel Arteta, the side is regarded as a genuine contender this term. Their squad has gained valuable experience, and their consistency on both domestic and European fronts has strengthened the belief that they could compete for the ultimate prize.

Arsenal’s Strengths and Ambitions

The recent transfer window has also enhanced their prospects, with the club assembling a squad that many rivals would envy. The quality and depth available to Arteta provide him with multiple tactical options and the ability to adapt to different challenges. This has prompted widespread opinion that Arsenal are one of the sides most capable of going all the way in the competition.

Nonetheless, the Champions League remains the most demanding tournament in world football. Every fixture poses unique challenges, and success requires not only quality but also resilience, tactical discipline and consistency across a series of difficult matches. For Arsenal, their results in the league phase will provide a strong indication of whether they are equipped to progress into the latter rounds with serious ambitions of lifting the trophy.

The Challenge of the League Phase

Their draw has pitted them against a blend of seasoned European heavyweights and less experienced clubs, ensuring that no match will be straightforward. While the Gunners are expected to secure victories in several of their fixtures, each game will require full concentration and determination.

Particularly intriguing will be their meetings with Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, three of Europe’s most formidable opponents. Success in these encounters would send a strong message and position Arsenal favourably for the knockout stages. Moreover, such victories would also provide valuable psychological momentum, proving that they can overcome the calibre of teams they are likely to meet again in the latter stages of the tournament.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s performance in this phase will reveal much about their capacity to compete at the very highest level. Should they rise to the challenge, they will confirm themselves as one of the leading contenders for the Champions League crown this season.

    1. Just to be absolutely clear, of course, since we are in the tournament, we’d have a chance regardless of anything else.

      1. Exactly BB. We all know that we “can win the Champions League” when the question they should be asking is “will we?”

        1. Jax, I wish you were right and that we all could be open minded enough to realize the possibility and simply have an opinion on our chances rather than professing to arrogantly “know” the fact that we will not (or will) win it.

  1. We have a very good chance to win UCL, because Arteta’s tactics have made us finish 2nd in EPL in the last three seasons and we’ve got a one-billion-pound squad

Many of our senior players can also play well in multiple positions, so injuries shouldn’t be an excuse. We should at least reach UCL semifinal again

    1. 👍gotanidea. We may or may not win the UCL but I also believe there is a very good chance. Our squad is looking great. We really have it going in the right direction.

    2. Arsenal has a strong squad, and I think we have a chance certainly. We shouldn’t forget though that Wenger’s teams, some pretty strong, went into the CL as English champions (and runners up, of course) on more than one occasion over the years yet didn’t carry off the trophy.

Lots of things will help decide, including luck, but at this stage even before a ball has been kicked in the CL, who knows?

      1. Agree Bertie, at one point many years ago I remember becoming aware that AW’s teams had the record for most consecutive years of getting to the round of 16. How did one of his great teams never win the trophy? There are many reasons (or “excuses” in the popular vernacular) which varied from year to year.

I also agree with your 2nd paragraph and as of 2 games ago I believe it was true for the PL title as well.

  2. No team has played more champions league matches without lifting the trophy than Arsenal, thanks in part to the legendary Frenchman.

Fresh from a bold run to the semifinals in the last campaign, Arsenal no doubt will be better with that experience, we had lost to the eventual winners but probably given them the toughest test in the competition beating them in the earlier stages.

It is for those reasons and the significant strengthening of the spine of the team ,Arsenal is expected to go mighty close.

    1. “No team has played more champions league matches without lifting the trophy than Arsenal, thanks in part to the legendary Frenchman.” – so are you saying it was Wenger’s fault we played so many CL matches but didn’t win the trophy?

I would have said that example from Wenger’s time shows just how difficult it is to win the CL.

      1. For a mighty long time during the legendary Frenchman reigns I took it for granted being in the champions league, it just felt like a given right to be rubbing shoulders in Europe elite competition.

Now depending on what side of the fence you sit, some will argue it’s Arsne Wenger fault for Arsenal m not do better at the time in the champions league, for failing to strengthen, I tell you , they will use his own words such as money is available but only for the right players.

And some will argue he did mighty well, even on a shoe string budget, that big ears mug just hard to win as you eluded to in your last sentence .

      1. The Spaniard have developed an impressive winning rate at Arsenal, but the trophy cabinet remain empty, very unlucky

          1. There are no more excuses Arteta has been backed to the hilt in this transfer window he has to deliver the premier league minimum requirement if not it’s time for him to go!

      2. “Although no Arsenal manager has equally done as well as AW in CL or PL”

No previous Arsenal manager had the luxury of only finishing in the top 4.

Also only one previous Arsenal manager managed in the PL, and like the previous managers, had a different remit. They had to win trophies.

        1. Not true mate
Most would know that Arteta in 5 full seasons has not been as successful as Mr Wenger was in his first 5

Does Arteta not have the same luxury ?
Doesn’t win titles , gets new contracts ,etc , fans defend him
          Don’t see the difference

          1. But I’m comparing Arteta with Mr Wenger.
Your saying but Mr Wenger had the luxury of not having to win trophies
Yey Arteta has that remit now mate
Also George Graham had for years been terrible in the League before being sacked

So like I said no manager has factually done as well as Mr Wenger lol

            1. Still, George Graham won trophies after winning his last Division 1 league title. Two domestic Cups and then that glorious night in Copenhagen when winning only our second European Trophy.

Wenger went 9 years without winning a trophy, Mikel still has a few years in the bank.

              1. Wenger also won trophies after his first title as well
One FA Cup 5 full seasons is money in the bank ?
Yet Wenger in that time won 2 Doubles and a FA Cup but he was the only mananger who didn’t have to win trophies
So ( a Gooner remember) claims that the man who won the most trophies in our history didn’t have to win trophies
                Stupendous lol

                1. Tell me which post war Arsenal managers lasted more than six years without winning a trophy before the days of finishing in the top 4 to qualify for Europe’s top trophy ?

Has Mikel gone 9 years without winning a trophy ? Pretty sure he hasn’t reached that figure yet.

                  1. Who’s arguing with either ?
                    Your arguing with yourself lol

I simply said Mr Wenger is our most successful manager and no Arsenal manager has done better then him in the Prem or CL

Your saying ….yeah but he didn’t have the remit of winning stuff ?
Most Gooners are aware he won more than anyone else

Would you rather have Arteta first 5 seasons or Wengers ?

                    1. Who is arguing 🤷, I’m just stating facts.

I noticed yet again that you have failed to answer a question, says it all really 🙄

                  2. Because your questions have nothing to do with what I originally said
                    I said
Although no Arsenal manager has equally done as well as AW in CL or PL

Now you want to know who has gone 6 years without a trophy and has Arteta gone 9 without a trophy

How does that change my original statement?

Unless you got anything to say about that then there is zero debate just someone looking for attention

                    1. So Arsenal FC only started in 1992 when the PL took over from the Football League then ? 🤔. Could have sworn we began in 1886.

Looking for attention 😂😂. Certain not. As I posted previously, just stating facts 😁.

                    2. Again doesn’t change that Mr Wenger is our most successful manager in the Prem or CL mate
                      Your just saying random things
Yeah pick any date you want , you won’t find a more successful Arsenal manager
                      I taught you this before
I’m working on another article mate so unless you got anything to say about the topic won’t be responding

                      Remember I said
No manager at Arsenal has done better in the CL or Prem then Mr Wenger
Most Gooners ( and you know my theory ) know that right away lol

                    3. You can’t teach me anything about The Arsenal. I’ve never, ever, said that Wenger wasn’t the most successful Arsenal manager, just that he had a different remit, regarding winning trophies, to previous post war managers of ours.

                    4. Yeah still makes no sense to me
He won more then any Arsenal manager but his remit was not to win trophies
                      Anyways we won’t agree lol
I think you need to go look up where Arsenal were when Wenger arrived
Factually no one has done better

                    5. Still, I see you still have problems comprehend the written word. No where have I posted that Wengers remit was not to win trophies 🙄. What I said was that apart from Wenger, no post war Arsenal manager went six years without winning a trophy and not got the sack. If you knew the history of the club you would know that that is correct.

I know darn well where we were when he rocked up in ’96. We had finished 5th the previous year under Rioch and had qualified for the UEFA Cup, going out to Monchengladbach in Koln.

                    6. Never said mate it wasn’t
Just don’t get what no manger going 6 years without a trophy has to do with ….
No manger has done better then Mr Wenger in the CL or PL
If you say you do in fact no that and you accept hes the most successful manager in our history then what’s your actual argument lol

                    7. Can’t mate
In a rush to get another article done

I only wrote no Arsenal manager did better in CL or PL then Arsene Wenger and was the most successful manager in our history .
If you agree mate then that’s debate done dude

Have not got time to be your social interaction or to give you a free history lesson lol.

                    8. Still, as I posted previously, no previous Arsenal manager had the luxury of just finishing in the top four to qualify for Europe’s top competition. So it’s hardly surprising he has the best Arsenal record in that competition.

Yet again you reckon you’re giving me a lesson on the history of The Arsenal. You are either drunk or smoking some Moroccan Woodbine 😂😂😂

                    9. Dan you are in Herr Dierr trap. He had already lost the argument from the beginning with the “luxury of only finishing in the top 4” statement because it applies even more to his hero than Wenger.

He will twist and turn things to get further from that statement or to bore/frustrate you until you give up the debate.

                    10. HH, I don’t have sporting heroes. As I posted the other month, heroes to me are people like Major Stephen Hambrook MBE, a man I used to drink with. Google him, you’ll see what a real heroe is.

It would seem you’re another one that doesn’t like facts.

                    11. No Herr Drier when it comes to Wenger and Arteta facts are clay to you. You will shape them to your agenda.

I have googled him and what an admirable man! A true hero in every sense of the word. That speak a lot about you if such a man is your hero.

Based on your posts that are not about Arteta I admire you, but when it comes to Arteta and Wenger you can’t even bother to hide your double standards!

  3. Guys, guys – come on now. A bit too early to start dreaming don’t u think. We don’t even know what our team will be like come January. Injuries, suspensions & all.

Let’s hold on on dishing out articles like dis for now… still healing from last season’s heart break ❤️‍🩹

  4. The further we progress, the more boring we will be, with the team playing more not to loose than to win. This is our main barrier to winning UCL.

  5. I tend to think Arsenal has some of the best armchair managers! Over many years, I have learnt that luck plays a big role in winning trophies or progressing in any competition! Can you imagine our best team of invincibles was knocked out of CL by Chelsea who were in turn knocked out by eventual winners Liverpool? The way Liverpool won that trophy was the most dramatic. They were 3-0 with less than 20 minutes to go but they went on to draw and take the game to extra time and then won on penalties lifting the 2005 CL trophy. Anything is possible.
Can Arsenal win CL? Basing on verifiable variables, I would say yes but then games are not always won based on objective factors. Sometimes subjective factors may determine the course of events. Let’s remain hopeful.

    1. Some of the worst armchair managers would be a better statement David and, YES, I include myself!!

      1. Ken1945,

I would like it to be known that I sit on a settee thank you very much. 😂🤣👍

    2. DR, while I agree with most of what you posted, I’m pretty sure you have mixed up the years regarding Liverpool and Chelsea. Wasn’t it Monaco who knocked out Chelsea in the semi final and then lost to Porto in the Final ?

      1. Just in the other article you were mocking Wenger’s 9 years trophy drought and here you agree that it’s luck winning trophies.

        Do you have a conscience?

All of you keep mocking Emery’s Baku to this day, wasn’t it just “bad luck”?

        This blatant hypocrisy is depressing.

        1. So it was bad luck in 2016 that we didn’t win the PL ? Nothing to do with our CF failing to score for 3 months ? It was just down to bad luck that we kept getting battered by Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the CL ? It was just bad luck getting battered at Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup ? Just bad luck getting knocked out of the League Cup by Bradford City ?

          My conscience is clear 😁.

          1. When you put all Arteta’s failings down to bad luck, then it applies to the rest of football personnel past and present by default.

Is finishing 2nd three times in a row bad luck or not having what it takes to reach the top?

  6. guys guys winning champions league is best on different elements.but to me my only pray is the team to put much effort and let them belelieve they can beat any team who comes across….
